What is Trichology?
Trichology is the scientific study of the hair and scalp. It is a para-medical field which deals with disorders involving the anatomy and physiology of them both.
A Trichologist is a specialist in all types of hair loss, hair disorders and scalp problems; is medically trained in these areas, and able to diagnose all issues relating to them. A Trichologist has studied the structure of the hair and of the skin, the body’s chemistry and its cardiovascular, nervous, digestive, endocrine and immune systems.
This enables a Trichologist to have a full understanding of the impact that disease, diet, lifestyle and chemicals can have on your hair and scalp. A Trichologist recognises all conditions related to the hair and scalp, the underlying causes and how they can be put right.
Midlands Trichology strongly recommends that you are educated about the Trichologist you wish to visit. Check qualifications and ensure that they are a member of a registered organisation that follows a strict ethical code of conduct.
Midlands Trichology’s Consultant Demi Griffiths is a fully qualified and registered Trichologist having passed the Level 4 Certificate in Trichology and is registered with The World Trichology Society.
Why Visit A Trichologist Rather Than A GP or Dermatologist ?
A Trichologist has the time and specialist knowledge to understand and thoroughly investigate your issues.
A GP can often refer a patient to a Dermatologist but as we know appointments are very difficult to get and it often takes a considerable amount of time before you are seen. It is important to be aware that the earlier the diagnosis for any hair loss or thinning issues, the better the outcome and prognosis, therefore waiting for long periods of time through the NHS may not help certain conditions. Dermatologists are amazing specialists in their field, but they often do not have the extensive hair and hair loss knowledge that a Trichologist has. A Dermatologist is predominantly a skin specialist.
